This term we are studying The Tudors.

We found out that the poor people rarely ate meat, instead they ate lots of vegetables which they boiled in a pot over a fire.

This was called pottage.

We chopped lots of vegetables, (swede, carrots, parsnips, potatoes, cabbage and cauliflower).

Then we boiled them with some herbs, until they were soft. We did not add anything else.

Then we ate our pottage just like the Tudors did, with our fingers! (Well they didn't have knives and forks in those days!)

We rested a chunk of bread on one knee, and when we had eaten the chunks of vegetable, we used the bread to soak up the juices and wipe our dishes clean.

Nearly everyone thought the pottage was very tasty.

The poor people in Tudor times had a much healthier diet that the rich. The rich people in Tudor times ate lots of meat, including peacock and swan. They did NOT generally eat vegetables, because these were what poor people ate. Rich people also liked to eat sugared fruits. They thought sugar was good for them! Rich people had more bad teeth than poor people.
